Brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome (BOAS) is an animal welfare issue that can affect short, flattened faces (brachycephalic breeds) such as French bulldogs, Pugs, & English bulldogs. Affected dogs suffer from respiratory difficulties due to their anatomical abnormalities, including narrowed airways, elongated soft palates, & small nostrils.

These issues lead to breathing difficulties, exercise intolerance, overheating, & even life-threatening respiratory infections, collapse, and death.

BOAS can significantly impact an animal’s quality of life, causing discomfort & distress, & requires surgical intervention to alleviate symptoms. There are numerous secondary diseases that result from dogs with BOAS & chronic oxygen deprivation. Therefore, it’s considered an animal welfare concern as it affects the health & well-being of these pets.
