They say dogs are a man’s best friend. What about cats? They give us so many snuggles and purrs and deserve the same love. However, cats require different care than dogs. They need mental and physical stimulation that recalls their natural instincts to stay happy and healthy. Our Boca Midtowne Animal Hospital team has compiled four feline-friendly tips for happy cats.
-
Let your cat play
Cats, like all animals, need entertainment to avoid boredom—which can lead to inappropriate behavior, like scratching the sofa—and stay mentally sharp. Many cat toys are available, but their favorites likely will be ones that appeal to their inner hunter, which include:
- Dangling toys — Toys like feathers or stuffed balls that dangle off the ends of wands are great for keeping your cat engaged as they chase or jump after the “prey.” You have to be involved, too, so you can bond while you have fun.
- Electronic mice — Electronic toys that mimic prey animals will keep your cat entertained for a long time as they chase, catch, and “kill,” and satisfy their hunting instincts.
- Puzzle games — Interactive puzzle feeders or games will keep your cat busy and mentally sharp.
Always consider toys that are designed especially for cats, ensure they are size-appropriate, and rotate them regularly, so your cat has new, exciting toys and doesn’t get bored.

Let your cat climb
You probably don’t walk into the kitchen and find your dog on the kitchen counter! But, you might find your cat there, or even on the top of the refrigerator. Cats often jump on high surfaces, not because they want to knock down your favorite vase, but because they feel more secure on high surfaces where they can safely observe what is happening below and not feel exposed from above. Large cats in the wild still hang out in trees.
Provide your cat with their own tree. Cat trees are available in many different sizes, designs, and scratching surfaces. You can also install several shelves throughout your house that they can jump to and from, or provide access to a window sill where they can safely survey the world outside—and the birds and squirrels stay safe, as well.
-
Let your cat scratch
Unless you’ve been blessed with the calmest of cats, they will likely at some stage scratch something you would prefer they didn’t. Fortunately, you can provide them with scratching outlets. Cats instinctively need to keep their claws sharp for hunting, despite their prey being a feather on a stick. They also need scratching posts to maintain their nail length and for stretching out their bodies. Scratching posts come in all sizes, shapes, and surface textures. You may have to experiment some to find your cat’s preferred texture (e.g., carpet, sisal).
To make things worse—avoiding this damage by trimming your cat’s nails is often difficult, but
our Boca Midtowne Animal Hospital team can demonstrate nail trimming if you need help.
-
Let your cat hide
All animals hide when they’re frightened, but cats hide for many other reasons. Sometimes, simply because they feel like it. Cats will hide under beds or in closets to relax or nap quietly where they feel comfortable and protected.
Some cat trees include boxes or covered perches where cats can hide, but other resources are available. Cat tents make adorable hiding spots where your cat can camp out—pun intended—when they need a break from the household hustle and bustle. Your cat will appreciate their own several hiding spots throughout the house where they can relax or sleep until they are ready to come out and play.
Cats are considered independent and self-sufficient animals, but they still need special care to be happy and healthy. Now you can visit your local pet store with a list of items to purchase for your cat. Don’t forget the treats!
