Brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome (BOAS) is an ANIMAL WELFARE ISSUE that can affect short, flattened faces (brachycephalic breeds) such as French bulldogs, Pugs, & English bulldogs.
Affected dogs suffer from respiratory difficulties due to their anatomical abnormalities, including narrowed airways, elongated soft palate, & small nostrils.
What’s An ELONGATED SOFT PALATE? The soft palate = soft part at the back of the roof of the mouth that separates the nasal passages from the mouth.
An elongated soft palate extends into the throat (they suck this into the air pipe as they attempt to breathe) & it blocks oxygen airflow into the trachea/windpipe
These issues lead to breathing difficulties, exercise intolerance, overheating, & life-threatening respiratory infections, collapse, & death.
BOAS can significantly impact an animal’s quality of life, causing discomfort & distress, & requires surgical intervention to alleviate symptoms.
There are numerous secondary diseases that result from dogs with BOAS & chronic oxygen deprivation. Therefore, it’s considered an animal welfare concern as it affects the health & well-being of these pets.
